If you think someone else will hatch your egg, you must be cuckoo

According to Jack Rosenberger, when IBM Vice President of Innovation Bernie Meyerson was asked

How do you go from the idea stage to the actualization stage?

Meyerson replied

First and foremost, stop trying to convince others that it’s a great idea for them to do. Do it yourself. You have to step up and own the idea. If you don’t step up and own it, no one’s going to believe in your idea. Second, find the people who can complete what you want done. You’re not the only smart person in the universe… You have to find the people who have the necessary skills to help get the job done.

According to Robert Slater in Portraits in Silicon, regarding Howard Aiken (of Mark 1 fame)

Once a student approached him with the concern that someone might steal his (the student’s) ideas before the publication of his thesis. “Don’t worry about people stealing an idea,” replied Aiken. “If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.”

People don’t copy ideas, they copy implementations and behaviors.
